Zuckerberg blames Trump for coronavirus hitting US ‘significantly worse’ than other countries

Mark Zuckerberg has blamed the Trump administration for the US coronavirus outbreak becoming “worse than many other countries” due to “less effective” leadership.

The Facebook CEO slammed President Donald Trump’s response to the pandemic during a Thursday afternoon discussion with Dr Anthony Fauci.

“At this point, it is clear that the trajectory of the US is significantly worse than many other countries, and that our government and this administration have been considerably less effective in handling this,” Zuckerberg said during the convo, which was live-streamed by Reuters.

The tech entrepreneur asserted that the US “reopened too quickly” before lowering the number of reported cases, citing the sharp drop of cases in “every other developed country” as an example of the misstep.

“Our response needs to be guided by science,” he added before expressing his gratitude for Fauci’s “dedicated leadership”.

Fauci, who had repeatedly warned the nation about rushing to open businesses, agreed that some states “jumped over” their COVID-19 reopening guidelines.

“One of the things that became clear is when you look at what the guidelines were for opening, you know the checkpoints that you have to get past before you go into the next phase, some of them went too quickly and jumped over them,” he said.

“That is a recipe for getting into trouble.”

The nation’s top disease expert gave credit to state governors for implementing mitigation methods to stop the spread of the virus.

But he also pointed to Americans who flouted reopening rules by flocking to bars and gatherings without wearing masks or practising social distancing.

“What we saw were clips of people at bars congregating without masks, not staying distant, in crowds, and that’s what I believe is at least part of the explanation for why we’ve seen the surges went up,” he said.
